by Rev. J.R. Goodwin. (Click on title above to hear recording) The recording begins as the congregation is concluding the last verse of "Everybody Ought to Know Who Jesus Is." You don't get a service that is much more Spirit-filled than this one. I counted five messages in tongues coming from three different people, and Dad interprets them all. Additionally, Dad prophesies a personal word to a "Brother McClung." I want you to notice though, that the word prophesied is not of the character that is so common in some circles today. It is not flattery heaped upon flattery. It is acknowledgment of what the brother is doing, where he is going, what his concerns are, and what God thinks and instructs about the entire matter. This is an excellent example of what personal prophecy, when given by God, will always be. Dad also prophesies to the entire congregation, directing this prophetic word to all who desire to be used in spiritual gifts, giving the wisdom of God on how to pursue their desire. Drawing from Romans 1:21, Dad gives a strong correcting exhortation concerning visions and hearing from God. His warning, although given over 40 years ago, is what all Charismatic believers need to heed today. Although he and particularly Sister Goodwin had been given by God numerous visions, and had known others similarly used, he cautions that most of the time that Christians claim to have heard from God or claim to have had a vision, it is usually simply their own imaginations. I would ask you also to notice how Dad preaches on the subject of visions. He does not compare visions with visions, as is so common today in our circles. Instead, he gives what God's written Word has to say on the subject. This is an example of what kept the Goodwins' ministry anointing pure--they didn't mix in all kinds of goofy teachings, error, personal interpretations of Scripture, and emphasize experiences at the expense of the Word. No. They put the preaching and teaching of God's Word first and foremost, and then secondarily, they cooperated with and permitted spiritual manifestations that they were certain were from the Holy Spirit. My brethren, this is the only way to flow in the Spirit, stay sound, and stand the test of time: minister the Word and the Spirit. Be people of the Word and of the Holy Spirit. Emphasizing God's holy written Word first of all, and flowing with His Spirit in subjection to the Word. The Word and the Spirit always agree. Copyright 2007 Mel C. Montgomery All Rights Reserved.
