David DuPlessis
"The Wiggleworth Prophecy"

Rev. David DuPlessis                                  Smith Wigglesworth
"Mr. Pentecost"                                           "Apostle of Faith"

 "The Wigglesworth Prophecy"

by David Du Plessis

(mp3 format)

On this recording, made in 1970, Brother David DuPlessis shares that he was filled with the Spirit in 1918 and entered the ministry in 1920.  While heading a missionary organization in his native South Africa, which was originally begun by John G. Lake and followers of John Alexander Dowie, David DuPlessis became good friends with Smith Wigglesworth.

DuPlessis tells of Wigglesworth's early life, his ministry in Johannesburg, and of having Wigglesworth live with him in his home for several months.  At meetings in South Africa, Wigglesworth preached in English and DuPlessis interpreted the messages into Afrikaans.  He tells several delightful stories of Wigglesworth's habits and compares Wigglesworth's healing ministry to that of others he had known:  Branham, T.L. Osborne, Tommy Hicks, and Stephen and George Jeffreys in England.  DuPlesses also knew some 70 healing evangelsits through the Voice of Healing organization, and states that "not one of them had the healing ministry that Wigglesworth had."

Please note that eight minutes and 45 seconds into the recording, the sound is muffled for a few seconds.

In 1936, Wigglesworth bursts into David's office, demands that he stand up, puts his hands on his shoulders, shoves him against the wall, and begins prophesying to him.  He prophesies in 1936 what began to came to pass nearly 20 years later in the Charismatic Renewal.  God used David DuPlessis to bring the Baptism in the Holy Spirit into many old-line and Catholic churches.  Wigglesworth ends the prophecy by saying, "It's no use.  I can't tell you anymore because there are some things that even I don't understand, and I don't know how to explain them to you"  After prophesying, Wigglesworth bowed his head and prayed, "Lord, bless it."

There is a great lesson to be learned from Brother David's reaction to Wigglesworth's prophecy.  After Wigglesworth prophesied, he asked him if he had scripture to back up the prophecy.  You see, even though he knew Wigglesworth, he judged even the prophecy of Wigglesworth by God's written word.  So should we all do with every prophecy that is spoken in our midst.

Explaining the meaning of the prophecy, Wigglesworth said the first movement of the Spirit would be a layman's movement.  The second one, a clergy movement, and he quotes some passages in scripture to confirm the validity of the prophecy.

God warned David to "remain humble and faithful."   He said that as God opened the door for him to minister among the old line denominational churches--for which he was bitterly criticized--he never compromised and never apologized for the Pentecostal message.

The Prophecy and the Consequences:

This prophecy did indded end up being fulfilled.  In the late 1950's and early 1960's, God began opening doors for Brother David to go and connect with the highest levels of the old-line denominational church and with the Vatican.  Through these contacts, God brought to these institutions a better understanding of the modern work of the Holy Spirit and thus was birthed the "Charismatic Movement" through which multitudes were filled with the Spirit, spoke in tongues, and began to realize that the Gifts of the Spirit are for today.

The Assemblies of God revoked the ordination papers of David DuPlessis for ministering in these denominations, but to their credit, reversed themselves years later when they saw the fruit of his ministry, and re-instated him in their movement.

Brother David's willingness to minister to others outside his denomination, similar to the Goodwins' willingness, endeared him and them to many.  And in the same way that many came to call Rev. and Mrs. J.R. Goodwin by the affectionate titles of "Mom" and "Dad," so they also came to call Brother David, "Mr. Pentecost."

     Some outstanding quotes:

"Woe betides the man who gets his life direction by some prophet or prophetess.  The Guide lives in you.  And because He dwells in us, New Testament prophecy is not like Old Testament prophecy.  For in the Old Testament, the Spirit moved upon the prophet to speak to the people but there was no Spirit in the people.  They just had to listen to the word.  But today, the Church is a body born of the Spirit and the Spirit is in them.  You don't talk to them like people who don't know the Spirit.  That's why every one of us has got to know guidence from the Lord."

And concerning stealing members from other pastors' churches:

"If you are looking for the other fellow's sheep, I guarantee you you'll end up with his goats."
